GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE 4 C'S

There’s more to consider about a diamond’s quality than how big it is and how brightly it shines. Understanding the 4 Cs— cut, color, clarity, and carat weight— is essential for selecting the perfect diamonds that can turn an ordinary piece of jewelry into a spectacular treasure. At Michael Agnello Jewelers, we take pride in our expert staff, who are dedicated to educating our customers about these crucial factors so they can make more informed purchases. Whether you're searching for an elegant engagement ring or a dazzling piece of statement jewelry, our knowledgeable team is here to guide you through every detail, ensuring you can shop confidently every time.

CUT

The cut of a diamond significantly influences its overall beauty and brilliance, making it a crucial factor in diamond selection. Unlike the other Cs, which are determined by nature, the cut is solely the result of human craftsmanship. It refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light, affecting qualities like its sparkle, fire, and scintillation. A well-cut diamond will reflect light internally from one mirror-like facet to another and then disperse it through the top of the diamond, creating a spectacular display of light. In contrast, a poorly cut diamond, regardless of its clarity or color, can appear dull and lifeless, even when under bright light.

The Diamond Cut Scale defines a diamond’s cut quality based on a scale ranging from Excellent to Poor. This scale assesses how well a diamond's facets are aligned and proportioned, impacting the stone's ability to reflect light. An Excellent cut grade indicates a diamond with maximum brilliance and sparkle, while a Poor cut grade signifies a diamond with limited light reflection. By providing comprehensive guidance on the nuances of diamond cut, our expert staff can ensure that our customers understand and appreciate the artistry behind each stone, and make a choice that enhances its natural beauty.

CLARITY

Diamond clarity is a measure of the internal and external imperfections found in a diamond, which can affect its appearance and value. Internal imperfections, known as inclusions, may consist of tiny crystals, air bubbles, or fractures. External flaws, called blemishes, can appear as scratches or nicks on the surface. These imperfections can impact the diamond's ability to reflect light and, consequently, affect its overall brilliance and beauty as well as its value.

Established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the diamond clarity scale categorizes diamonds from Flawless (FL) to Included (I), with various grades in between. Flawless diamonds, which have no visible inclusions or blemishes under 10x magnification, are incredibly rare and highly prized for their unblemished beauty. On the other hand, included diamonds have noticeable imperfections that can affect their transparency, brilliance, and overall value. While most inclusions and blemishes are microscopic and do not detract from the beauty of the diamond to the naked eye, a higher clarity grade on a much deeper level generally indicates a more valuable and desirable stone.

COLOR

Diamond color— or more accurately, the lack of color— plays a significant role in determining a diamond's quality and value. The ideal diamond is colorless, allowing maximum light refraction and sparkle. Even a slight hint of color can affect the diamond's appearance and diminish its brilliance and overall value. The closer a diamond is to being colorless, the rarer and more valuable it becomes. A colorless diamond acts as a perfect prism, dispersing light into a beautiful spectrum of colors, enhancing its allure and rarity.

Also developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the diamond color scale ranges from D to Z. Diamonds graded D are completely colorless and exceptionally rare, commanding the highest prices and greatest demand. As you move down the scale toward Z, diamonds exhibit increasing levels of yellow or brown tint, which can lower their value. However, the differences in color can be subtle and may not always be noticeable to the untrained eye. Expert jewelers and gemologists understand these nuances and can better inform you about how a diamond earns its color grade and can help you choose a diamond that not only fits your aesthetic preferences but also maximizes value.

CARAT WEIGHT

A gem’s carat weight is a crucial factor in determining its size and, subsequently, its value. It is a unit of measurement used to describe the weight of the diamond, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams. Generally, larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable, making carat weight a significant determinant of price. However, carat weight is not the sole factor affecting a diamond's value— the overall quality of the stone, including its cut, color, and clarity, also plays a crucial role. A diamond’s overall value is the result of all 4 Cs, not just carat weight, clarity, color, or cut.

It's important to note that two diamonds of equal carat weight can have vastly different appearances and values based on their cut and proportions. A well-cut diamond may appear larger and more brilliant than a poorly cut diamond of the same carat weight. Additionally, as carat weight increases, the price per carat also rises, often exponentially. This means a two carat diamond will generally cost significantly more than double the price of a one carat diamond of similar quality. Similarly, a one carat diamond can often command significantly higher prices than a 0.9 carat stone. Understanding the nuances of carat weight and how it interacts with other factors to influence a diamond's overall appeal and value is vital to shopping with confidence.
